To bowhunt in South Africa is not as expensive as you might think and don‘t need heavy or hi – tech equipment to hunt your dream animals. If you can hit on 20 – 30 yards with your 55 – 70 pound bow your dream is in your hands. Obviously on walk and stalk hunts you should be able to shoot at longer distances. If you compare an Africa bow hunt to an Alaska – or Western- United States hunt you will definitely be surprised with the value for money factor and then with the adventure itself. With Kuche Safaris it is not a one or two shot deal – you will have lots of different species and lots of wild game in front of you everyday. Hunting Location and trophies.
Kuche Safaris makes use of different privately owned hunting areas one of the reasons is to maintain and deliver top quality service and trophies. We have hunted a few top 10 animals the last three years. Some with Rifle, Bow and Crossbow. Our luxurious main camp is about 4 hours drive from Johannesburg International Airport.

Modern wildlife management practices are employed by the owners of our concessions and we support them. This is done to ensure high quality of trophies every year. See our gallery section. Wildlife research indicates that both the quality and numbers of wild game in the Limpopo Province have increased over the last 20 years as many cattle ranchers has gone back to the hunting industry and more land became available for wild game. You will hunt on areas where you can encounter 28 species on the same property. You will encounter more game and species than the ones you hunt.
We also get new hunting areas every year to ensure a new experience and the scenery for our 80% returning clients. It is noticeable that most of the SCI’s top 20 animals on different species that are found in South – Africa were hunted out of the Limpopo region for example Kudu, Blue Wildebeests and Impala. Kuche safaris also undertake big 5 / dangerous game hunts on archery where you’re professional hunter will have a back–up rifle for your protection. We will try our up most best to ensure that you have a bow kill; it will only be used in situations where you or someone else is in danger.
How we Bowhunt
The best practical times for Bow hunting in our areas are from mid June through to mid October when our rainfall season starts. To provide you with best opportunity for success and game sporting we hunt on different areas around camp. We hunt mainly out of stands / blinds around waterholes and feeding spots.
Our blinds are well designed and placed for shots around 20 – 30 yards. This also decreases the risk of wounding your animal. We make use of elevated – , ground -, and pit blinds which are normally big enough for 4 people. This also ensures that we can accommodate our handicapped hunters to feel comfortable and move around. We are aware of the special needs of some of our handicapped hunters have when it comes to heat and ventilation. Therefore we change our blinds for them according to information that you will provide us forehand for example the height of the arrow from the around on a draw and if you are left or right handed in front. The hunting areas and vegetation are similar to conditions found in Southern Texas USA. Walk and stalk is difficult but you are welcome to try. Most of our species react like your white tail deer.
A typical day would start at 05: 30 with the morning breakfast with hunting until lunch around noon in camp. Then back to hunting until dark. If you prefer you can stay out and hunt all day long with a packed lunch for you. You will be accompanied by a fully licensed PH who will identify your trophy and help you through the hunt. When an animal is taken you will bring it to the skinning area as quick as possible to be skinned and salted.
Shot placement as you know is very important and you are again reminded that the vital organs of the African animals are situated right between the front shoulders. A very good book on the anatomy of African wild game is Safari press’s “the perfect shot” by Dr Kevin Robertson. Although there are a lot to be said about using fixed – or mechanical heads we have seen both do wonders and both failed therefore we would suggest that you use what you feel comfortable with. Again it is all about shot placement and penetration. If possible we try to get every shot on video to enjoy the hunt afterwards or to help us on wounded animals.
We would suggest the following:
- Practice a lot before coming over.
- If you use mechanical tips make sure that your bow supplies enough kinetic energy for it function properly.
- Bring bird tips with to do some bird hunting through the boring parts of the day.
- On normally plains game up to Blesbuck size we would recommend a cutting diameter of at least an inch. For bigger game like Zebra and Kudu there is nothing wrong to go a little bigger.
- Most clients use 125 grain, 3 blades with good success.
- Practice at different angles and distances.
